Flash Floods

A flash flood may occur during intense rain, which occasionally happens in the Azores. During these times of heavy rainfall, floods can originate from sea waves that invade the land, or overflowing streams.

Self-protection Measures

Before

  • Do not throw garbage or rubble into the streams, always keep them clean;
  • Warn not to build on riverbeds;
  • Look for: warning signs of floods and evacuation; meeting points for a possible evacuation.

On the verge of a Flash flood

  • Listen to the radio for information and instructions;
  • Evacuate animals towards safe locations;
  • Help moving household items into the upper floors, placing the most valuable objects in the highest places;
  • Close packages of toxic or polluting products and put them in safe places.

During

  • Keep calm and try to soothe the people around you;
  • Turn off the electric current and cut the water and gas supply;
  • Gather the emergency gear, listen to the radio and follow the instructions;
  • Prepare for a possible evacuation, which will only be instructed in case of absolute need.
