O Serviço Regional de Proteção Civil e Bombeiros dos Açores recomenda que sejam tomadas as seguintes medidas de autoproteção:

RAIN/STRONG WIND
• Verify the validity of your house and vehicle insurance policies and confirm if they cover natural phenomena;
• Consolidate roofs, doors and windows;
• Cut or prune the nearest trees that show signs of risk of falling. In case of large trees that are not your property, inform the official entities of your municipality;
• Keep the drainage systems clear as well as the ones adjacent to your home. Alert the relevant authorities in case you know about a situation that may cause damage;
• Keep the loose objects of your garden safe, as well as the garbage deposit or any others that may be projected into the wind. An object, as light as it may be, thrown by strong winds may cause serious material and personal damage;
• Close properly doors, windows and shutters;
• keep your vehicle tank full, once you may have to drive longer distances as an alternative to interrupted or impassable roads;
• Shelter all animals, particularly pets, as they are extremely sensitive to storms;
• Inside the house, select a safe place, away from doors and windows, to prevent increasing the risk;
• If there are floods, strange noises or cracks in the walls, contact the authorities. You may have to leave the house;
• If you need to leave the house, turn off the electricity, gas and water. This measure contributes to avoiding accidents in your assets and security forces. Take your emergency kit with you, as you may need it;
• If you are outside the house, look for shelter, wait for the bad weather to stop;
• Do not circulate unless you need to. It may disturb the circulation of the security forces and put your safety at risk, namely to fall into holes hidden by water tables;
• In unpaved sites, be extra careful, as the waters may cause soil erosion, leading to the falling of walls, slopes, posts and others;
• Turn on the radio, pay attention to the recommendations broadcasted and do not help disseminate rumors;
• Always follow the recommendations provided by the authorities present, as they are there to assist you.
